Should I Use an Electric Toothbrush?

The electric toothbrush was first introduced in the 1960's and became an instant success. However, first models did not benefit from today's technological revolution.  Current models are extremely well designed as well as reasonably priced. I favor a SoniCare ultrasonic brush or the BRAUN electric toothbrush because of it's small head,  and strongly recommend using such a device IF you cannot perform adequate plaque removal using a regular toothbrush..  You  should consider buying one if you fall into the following categories:

  • If your dentist or hygienist continually mention that your plaque control is not up to par.
  • You lack manual dexterity or have a disability that limits your ability to brush.
  • You have braces; an electric brush may reach crevices you can't otherwise clean.
  • You have been told by your dentist or hygienist that you are brushing too hard with a regular brush.
  • You have periodontal disease or gingivitis  (gum disease).
  • Parents who are having difficulty getting the children to brush. These brushes are user friendly and kids love them.
  • You love gadgets and are likely to brush more with an electric brush

The following tips should be kept in mind when brushing:

  • Cleaning your teeth with a soft nylon bristle regular brush should take 2 to 3 minutes but I have found that a good cleaning can be accomplished quicker with an electric brush.
  • Don't miss the gumline.
  • Brush twice a day and floss once. Remember that without flossing you are missing a large and important portion of your teeth. Most cavities occur between your teeth and brushing alone does not clean these areas. So floss the teeth you want to keep.
  • Store your brush upright so the moisture will drain down away from the brittles, minimizing bacterial growth.  .
  • Cover your brush so germs are not spread to others, thereby reducing the chances of spreading a cold to the entire family.
  • Don't share your brush.
  • Don't store your toothbrush on the bathroom counter near the toilet
  • Get a new brush once the bristles are worn and flare outwards.

In summary, remember that you can still do a good job with a traditional brush but an electric brush will make brushing fun, efficient and leave your teeth with that clean polished feeling. Don't forget to ask your dentist/hygienist for their recommendations.
