FOR SWELLING
Apply an ice pack to the affected side of your face 15minutes on, 15 minutes off for 2-3 hrs if necessary. This is ONLY for swelling during the first 24-36 hours after surgery. Do not apply heat.
FOR PAIN
Pain and stiffness of the jaw are generally expected. The amount of discomfort varies considerably from one person to another and with the nature of the surgery. Tylenol will usually relieve minor discomfort. If stronger pain medication has been prescribed: take as directed; do not increase the dosage on your own; do not drink alcohol; do not drive a motorized vehicle or operate machinery; do not take on an empty stomach.
Pain usually subsides gradually. Should pain reappear 3-4 days following extractions, this may indicate the presence of an infection or a "dry socket." In such a case call your dentist.
Small sharp bone fragments may work their way up through the gums during healing; these are not roots. If annoying, please call your dentist.
BRUISING OF THE SKIN (IF IT OCCURS)
The black and blue discoloration will normally turn yellow and then will gradually fade in 5-7 days.
DIET
-Do not drink alcohol or very hot beverages. A soft diet is recommended for a few days.
-Do not skip meals.
-Drink plenty of fluids.
-Take one tablet of vitamins b and c daily to promote healing.
-Practice good oral hygiene.
-Starting 2 days after the surgery, rinse your mouth frequently with salt water for several days. (1 teaspoon per 8 oz water).
-Brush as usual but avoid the surgical area until it is fully healed.
