Implants

An Implant is firmly anchored within the supporting bone and in essence functions as an artificial root.  Then, over the implant is attached a replaced prosthetic tooth or teeth.

There are several basic types of implants. Sub-periosteal implants are a larger framework, custom fitted to a greatly resorbed lower jaw bone to provide a snowshoe-like effect over the bone for support.   Endosteal implants are inserted into the bone.

Reasons for an implant:

Fill space of missing teeth
Maintain facial shape
Prevent remaining teeth from drifting out of position
Restore chewing and speaking ability
Restore your smile
Upgrade from a removable partial denture to a permanent dental appliance
Alternative to unnecessary prepping of adjacent teeth (as in a fixed bridge)

What does getting an implant involve?

Getting an implant usually requires two or more phases. After initial planning between the general dentist and the specialist, the case is ready to begin. You are usually referred to the specialist for the first phase of treatment.  The first phase is the surgical phase.   This is usually performed  by a specialist surgeon (a periodontist or an oral and maxillofacial surgeon.)  3-6 months after initial surgical placement, the implant(s) has fully fused with the surrounding bone. Then the specialist uncovers it and allows it to heal about 6 weeks. Then you are referred back to the general dentist for the second phase of treatment, the restorative phase.

The restorative phase usually consists of two or more appointments.  The first visit is to get a very accurate impression of the implanted area(s) and also to get a good shade match for the eventual crown(s) or bridge that will be attached to the implant next. The case is then sent to the lab for about 2 weeks after which the crown(s) and various components will be received back by the dentist.

At the second visit, your implant supported crown(s) or bridge will be carefully checked, adjusted, and cemented to achieve a proper fit and appearance.  Occasionally your dentist may only temporarily cement the crown(s) or bridge, allowing your teeth and tissue time to get used to the new crown(s) or bridge.  The new crown(s) or bridge will be permanently cemented at a later time.

You will receive care instructions at the conclusion of the procedure.  Proper brushing, flossing and regular dental visits will aid in the life of your new implant crown or bridge.
