For as long as I can remember, people have always wanted whiter teeth.  Movie stars will go as far as crowning (capping) all their front teeth to get that big white smile. In the eighties porcelain veneers were introduced as a more conservative method.  However both veneers and crowns (caps) are techniques which involve removal of enamel which is replaced with porcelain to give the tooth a new surface.  In the last few years bleaching techniques have been introduced where the patient's teeth are bleached in the dental office.  Several office visits were required and the results are difficult at times to predict.  

More impressive is the recent introduction of a unique home bleaching technique, whereby a patient is fitted with custom trays made by your dentist, and bleaching is done while you sleep.  Results are evident after one night but for optimal long term results your dentist will determine how many treatments you require.  (Usually 14-16)

The advantages of this technique are numerous.  No drilling is required, no removal of enamel, and chair time in the office is minimized thereby making this remarkable treatment much more economical than crowns or veneers.  Furthermore you can whiten your teeth comfortably in the privacy of your home while you sleep.  Studies have also shown that no permanent damage is done to your teeth, the only side effect being a temporary sensitivity to temperature changes.  This quickly subsides when the bleaching is terminated.  One disadvantage is that it will only bleach enamel.  White fillings or caps will remain the same color so you may want to change those after your bleaching in order to match your new color.  Similarly if you require one or more crowns on your front teeth you may wish to bleach first before fitting the crowns.

This bleaching technique will give you whiter teeth permanently and a periodic re-bleaching for one or two nights every couple of years will refresh the color.
